I suppose he could be worse than Frare has been but not by much.

If you are planning for the future, especially with the new three batter rule coming into play next year, I wonder the reasoning behind giving a try out to a 30 year old journeyman, with a career ERA of five, who even if he pitches well would basically give you nothing back at the deadline.

Not saying Frare is the answer either but it might make more see to keep running him or another kid out there to see what they have in what figures to be another lost season.

On the other hand as dismal as the start has been and as bad as the bullpen has been maybe they are looking for someone, anyone to stabilize things at least for the short term.

Might also be right move for Frare's development. Let him practice and improve in games that matter less and not have it become a spiral.

Giolito to the DL. Sox recall Fulmer and Cordell (to replace Palka).

Fulmer has been solid so far. Hope he sticks and maybe calls an end to the Nate Jones era once Giollito is off the shelf.

Next move for me is Engel for Tilson.

Wonder if Fulmer will get the next Gio start or they are just bringing him up for some bullpen coverage the next few days and then planning on calling up whoever to make Gio's start.

Hope it's just a true 10-day stint for Gio obviously.

Edit: If he's back in 10 days he'd only miss the one start because of the off day on the 25th.

Now that Palka is in Charlotte, I'm curious who will get the AB's that Palka got against RHP. Engel? Cordell? Does Cordell get the AB's Engel previously got against LHP? My guess is that Engel will get most of the starts in CF in Detroit because of the ballpark dimensions.

@scottmerkin - "Renteria plans to run Cordell out there every day. He will also play some CF"

Glad to see Cordell get a chance to see what he can do for a while. If he succeeds that's awesome and if not give another guy a try.

Best defensive CF we've had since Mike Cameron. Can Tilson even catch?

Both sides of the ball matter. If Engel was used only as a 9th inning replacement, I'd be more okay with him.

No, Tilson is really a DH who will be shoehorned into CF because the Sox don't care about that stuff at all...

Honestly?!?!?

Giolito said he's going to miss one or two starts.

Well with Cordell in RF they have more coverage toward RCF so in theory the defense should be improved anyway and allow Leury to shade more to left to help cover Eloy or at least be less concerned about RF and be able to better patrol his own area.

We might see Tilson called up soon, he's tearing it up down in Charlotte.
