I really like the Jordan Stephens pick, a lot. He was Rice's ace last year and went down with TJ. Came back and eased into the rotation this year. If his medicals looked good, I am guessing they did to pick him, he could end up being as talented as a 2nd rounder, good arm.

For position players they take atheltic guys with a track record of success in other sports but a general lack of experience in baseball... and then fail miserably in turning them into baseball players.

I haven't paid close attention to the Cubs drafting but you guys seem to be describing a team that drafts accomplished baseball players rather than toolsy athletes without experience.

Seems to me the Sox simply need to change their philosophy when it comes to position players. Maybe match it up closer to their philosophy for drafting pitchers.
This really hasn't been true for a handful of drafts now. Lots of people just assume it to be their philosophy, because they went on a run. Do people still think they just take safe, low-ceiling college pitchers only (Broadway, McCullogh)? Hopefully this wears off, too.

They probably picked the best college pitcher in the draft in 2010 as well, or at least Sale looks it now. That is a nice way to build a solid starting rotation. And starting rotations teamed with reliable bullpens win a lot more championships that hitting.

Yup, I firmly believe that was a Kenny thing. If you recall, Kenny was obsessed with trying to get Carl Crawford. When he could not get him, he tried to find the next Carl Crawford.

Exactly. Hey, can jump out of a pool or over a car?

Yeah!!!

Can does he know how to throw or swing?

No.

Draft that man in the 1st round.

They're clueless.

A's took a favorite of mine from U of I just now in Duchene. Kid could be the next Mark Buehrle. Crafty LHP with sick movement and can put the ball about anywhere he wants.

But can he punch out a horse? Do a backflip?

If not, he doesn't meet our requirements.

The Sox did not draft Hawkins because he can do a backflip.

The Irony

Kenny: Can you do a backflip?

Courtney: Sure can boss!

Kenny: Great, you are now a Chicago White Sock

Courtney: Fantastic! (Does Back Flip)

Kenny: Woah Woah Woah... never do that again...

Ummm... actually it has continued to be their approach to position players. There have been exceptions amongst their top picks but they are just that... exceptions.

Sox get a local boy in the 8th round. Blake Hickman from Iowa.
He entered as a catcher, then moved to pitcher. A project pick, but it can work.

Yup, I think he projects a reliever, where he might be able to keep his velo up and bring back the life in his slider.
