It's not the Padres per se.
It's the act of going to the Padres. What would have been both the Sox top prospect and best player both go to the Padres. Complements of ......
Isn't that fantastic?

Tragg,

As was pointed out in the post just prior to yours $30 million per, if that is in fact the accurate WS bid, is a pretty good number.

My sentiments exactly. Not only low but woefully low, what's with that?

Because it will be outbid and the Sox need to do the outbidding due to the status of the major league team and the records of those in charge.
Sure it's "Competitive" but competitive was never going to be enough.
And White Sox brass were not reticent about their intent to make a major push for "premium talent."
But they certainly could raise that offer and I hope they do.

What would be enough?

If I am not mistaken, I do not think the Padres are willing to go to $30 million. I think they are hoping to sell the future giving their prospect haul.

Price got 7/$217 at the age of 30. Greinke got 6/$206.5 at the age of 32. Miggy Cabrera got 8/$248 in an extension on top of 2/$44, meaning that the extension years kicked in at the age of 33.

7/$210 would be much lower than expected for an elite 26-year-old.

I am not sure the MLB that created these contracts exists currently. This is part of the problem. In a normal world, Manny and Bryce are likely fighting it out over 35 million plus contracts. Now? There's a legitimate issue with them getting 30. Probably easy to spot why a strike is likely.

Exactly. Teams are being much more cautious with their contracts for guys over 30 and especially over 33. This is part of the new offensive scheme where bat speed is prized over almost everything else and has resulted in numerous arguments on these forums.

As players age, their fast twitch muscles get slower and offensive production drops significantly under the new system.

Players may have to adjust their expectations about what owners are willing to do/pay in terms of length of contract. Of course that also might mean you'll see yearly average increase and I wouldn't be surprised to see the players try to negotiate a year or two of arbitration years and try to force teams to go to arbitration after 2 years of service time instead of 3.

Oh and this is over 500 so somone please start the next thread.

Closed.
