Default RIP Rick Stelmaszek

Espn reported that former major leaguer and long time Twins coach Rick Stelmaszek passed away after a battle with cancer.

Rick was a Chicago native who went to Mendel HS on the far southside. RIP my friend.

I saw that he was waked on the East Side and buried out of Sacred Heart in the family's old neighborhood (Vets Park). A Chicagoan to the end. I knew a younger sibling, did not know him. Good people. RIP.

Condolences to his family and friends. I remember his time with the Cubs and thought he was a good player who deserved a longer look than he got with them.

I worked with a guy who knew him, they grew up in the same neighborhood.

Rick worked the winters for the Chicago Park District in the mid '70's and he was working at White Park ( 122nd and May) in the winter of 1974-75 and I had the opportunity to pitch rubber balls to him in the gym. He never missed a pitch and I could remember on day the Sun Times had quoted Bob Kennedy saying the Cubs were looking for a catcher who could hit lefthanded. Rick was on the Cubs and that's what he was, a left handed hitting catcher. He wasn't happy about it. The Cubs never gave him a chance. But he had a great career as a Twins coach.
