Well now this might seem as a wasted pick

The more I think about this odd pick, the more I suspect they chose someone they knew they could not sign so they could use the slot money for someone else. The round before they took Abbott they chose Evan Skoug, who had been projected to go much higher than round 7. Maybe they want to make sure they have enough money to convince Skoug to sign rather than go back for his senior year.

Anyway, that's my theory.

They could sign him...I mean if they offer well below slot value (and can allocate that somewhere else) he may take it since he wasn't even expected to be drafted.

My thinking is that he's an honors student and will get a partial scholarship for playing college sports, so he will value a college education way more than $160,000. It would be a leap of faith for him to go the baseball route out of the blue.

But that said, I sure hope he signs with the Sox. I'm intrigued.

Like others have said before me this was another fantastic draft for the White Sox! If they can do this again next year, I can see them being very competive in the years to come.

Larry King's son!

I guess there weren't any relatives of Kenny Williams or Rick Hahn available for that pick.

Tom Crean's son was selected w/ the 35th pick. He is headed to IMG according to sources around IU.

The Abbot story makes me think he IS going to sign. It ends with this:

Quote:
“You just never know what life is going to throw at you,” said Abbott’s father, Jeff. “We were lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

“The thing that really interested some scouts is what’s going to happen when he concentrates on one thing. He’s an honor student who played three sports. Their plan is to put him with the best hitting instructors, fielding instructors, weight-lifting trainers and basically take him from there.”
... which is his father speaking. That sounds like they are very open to signing and having him play baseball. Abbot is also quoted as saying he played baseball since he was 2 but only started Water Polo in high school. And the article says they brought him to Chicago for a workout.

In an earlier article Hostetler said that Abbot would need to spend two years in the instructional leagues before moving up. It sounds to me like this is well thought out pick for a potential long term high reward gamble.

Considering that they drafted all upperclass college guys before that pick, they will be able to pay Abbott and Skoug extra. On a side note, Water Polo is a real difficult sport to play, and requires a lot of hard work. If Abbott can go into baseball with that kind of dedication, he could be a good one.

It would be nice to see him play ball for thebSox. it's a very unique set if circumstances. Too bad the story about him only talked about swimming and water polo and little about him as a baseball player. I guess he is an intriguing raw talent.

Sox agree to terms with Burger. He came in about 0.5 M under slot.
