Default Andy Masur on radio broadcasts

I've been listening to the radio broadcast the past couple of games and have noticed Andy Masur stepping in for play-by-play around the third and fourth innings with Ed Farmer taking a color commentary role and Darrin Jackson nowhere to be heard. Does anyone know anything about this? Are they grooming Masur to take the PBP job in the near future? I don't remember hearing any stories this offseason about Masur being in the booth. I hope someone has answers because I'm very confused.

I was listening to the game on Sunday and it took him forever to say what the score was, but not only that, he actually sounded bad. Like his voice didn't sound quite right. I hope he is okay.

Guys, I want to know about Andy Masur. I don't need the thread hijacked by "Farmer sucks" comments.

I've neen hearing that Farmer's health is indeed not good.

This Andy Masur is likely going to be the new color guy after DJ moves on to PBP.

Probably the other way around. Masur is a professional PBP guy, color announcers are ex players the majority of the time.

Yep. Absolute silence is second and commercials are third.

Although Masur did catch himself before calling GRF ďThe Friendly ConfinesĒ, that is forgivable. I think heís been very solid.

Definitely something up. The voice change is frightening but hopefully it's nothing too serious.

I hope Farmer is OK, or that he gets treatment for whatever may ail him.

How does Masur sound when he does PBP? Does he call a good game?

As color analysts, I think both Farmer and Stone are excellent. (Jackson is a solid color analyst as well when paired with a good PBP announcer.) But both are aging, and itís not the worst idea in the world perhaps to scale back their duties.

If Masur is solid on PBP, then perhaps he ought to be the primary radio PBP (just as Benetti is the primary TV PBP). Then, move Farmer to radio color, and let Jackson - who has TV color analyst experience in addition to radio - fill in for both Farmer and Stone.

Farmer missed today's game and will miss the series at Wrigley, per Scott Merkin on Twitter, due to a personal situation. Andy Masur is filling in on play-by-play and the broadcast was noticeably much, much, much better.

Masur previously was play-by-play for the Padres. He was let go suddenly a few years ago. His removal was not a popular move by Padres fans.

Ed Sherman, back when he used to blog, wrote about Masur after he was let go by the Padres.

I've also noticed that Farmer's voice sounds a bit different this year. A little more "weathered" and fatigued. He is approaching 70 years old now so I'm not sure how much longer he can do this anyway. The baseball schedule is a grind. Perhaps he will take a page out of Hawk's book and work a half schedule and hopefully, he recovers from whatever is ailing him. I like Ed in the booth but I always felt that he was much better suited for color commentary like he did in the John Rooney days.

Iíve noticed the same thing. I recently re-read a 2017 Tribune article in which he was quite open about his previous struggles with Polycystic Kidney Disease, which ultimately took the life of my aunt. Two of my cousins have it, and another cousin is a carrier. Anyway, as of 2017 he was down to a single medication to guard against rejection of his donor kidney, so perhaps there has been some complication this year. Evidently his neighborhood in Southern California was hit hard by last winterís wildfires, so perhaps stress has also been a contributing factor.

In any case, I hope Farmer can make a full recovery, but if not, itís probably for the best for the Sox to reduce his schedule. Maybe he only does home games, and Masur does all the road PBP. Eventually, it would be nice for Masur - a professional PBP guy - to handle the PBP duties full time, while Farmer does color for select games. This way, Jackson - who is quite a good color analyst when paired with a good PBP guy, can serve as the backup color analyst to both Farmer and Stone (as Stone also looks to cut back).

Long term, once both Farmer and Stone retire, I think you give DJ the full time radio color analyst gig, and you try to get AJ Pierzynski as the full time TV color analyst. Or you go with occasional 3-man booths as Farmer and Stone cut back more.

I live on the west coast and the majority of games start at 5pm - right during the evening commute so I listen to a lot of Sox baseball on the radio. I have enjoyed Andy Masur this season. I don't know Ed Farmer but I am sure he is a very nice man and has been part of the White Sox family for many years but Andy is a breath of fresh air. My guess is that he is being 'groomed' for the full time job.
