Default Ned Yost retiring

Per Jon Morosi on MLB Network via Twitter: https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status...62046846676995

The fact he was able to get the Royals to the World Series twice is a testament to how incredibly talented those rosters were because he was NOT a good manager.

Sounds like the Royals are going to hire Mike Matheney. I know his managing style was not liked at all in St. Louis so this surprises me a bit.

Honestly, look at how much better the team has been playing since he was fired last year.

Funny how all the criticism about him died after the Royals won the WS.

No, it continued. I feel like his managerial style changed a little bit in 2015, where he didn't make quite as many head scratching moves but it could be that the Royals just had enough talent to compensate for his moves.

Lotta great managers out there if someone would lock down their 7th, 8th and 9th innings like Ned had those WS years.

Yost was a bad manager with a really great bullpen, and while it lasted, the bullpen made him look very good. Yost basically followed a script with his pitchers and filled in a lineup with players who made contact and aggressively grabbed what seemed like every opportunity to score. His strength as a manager in 2014-15, if you can call it a strength, was that he let his team play while running out lights-out relievers.

Bruce Bochy had to be a lot more creative with his bullpen in each of his three championships and eventually won Game 7 for his third title beating the Royals by using the pitcher who shutout the Royals in Game 5, for the last five innings. I heard one newspaper columnist question the value of baseball managers if Yost and Bochy were heading to a Game 7. Five years later, Yost is a managerial afterthought and Bochy is being honored in opponents' ballparks.

Both Yost and Bochy will retire at the end of the season. Neither have good teams this year. The Royals have already lost 100 games. Maybe the Giants would still be a few games behind the Cubs if the team hadn't traded some good bullpen components at the deadline. The Giants certainly have some holes this year. But Bochy retires with some believing he should be elected to the Hall of Fame for his managing. Yost retires as just a manager who won a World Series.

Any WSIer with an opinion and a spreadsheet is better than the minor league manager stiffs.
