I remember it more as swinging at pitches that you can drive and passing on those that you can't. The result should have been more walks. But also less strikeouts (especially swinging). Either way, the results weren't great overall.
I don't think upgrading hitting coach was the top priority on the list, but a change was due (it was about #6 on my list; #1-#5 assuredly won't happen).

That's nice to see, sitting in the high 90's and striking out overmatched hitters. Anyone here have any idea about the typical TJS recovery timeline - this seems ahead of schedule for his velocity to be all the way back?

It used to be 14-18 months, but that seems to be shrinking.

Yeah read he was sitting 97-98 and was over 100. This is huge.

He topped out only at 98 when he was briefly up last year, though I think I read he was already injured when he pitched with the Sox which makes sense.

Here is Steverson's philosophy, in his own words, as quoted in an article from the Chicago Tribune.

"We’re an approach-orientated organization. Specifically, be on time, have an idea of what you’re looking for and swing at strikes. We know nothing good happens from swinging at balls out of the zone. The thought process is recognition of the strike zone and attacking the strike zone. The words we use are 'selectively aggressive' to the strike zone. Everybody’s career is built upon their ability to recognize and consistently put strikes in play."

Nothing wrong with that philosophy, except of course “orientated” is not a word.

I suppose one could object to it not having goals for quality of contact? Launch angle and exit velocity?

I think we need to acquire a left-handed hitting rf or DH and at least 1quality veteran starting pitcher. Going to a 6 man rotation may be a good idea as well as wel will have at least 2 starters returning from tommy john and others like cease who haven't logged that many pitches.

Tilson has been outrighted, expected to declare free agency.

When he didn't receive a September call-up, the writing was on the wall. I wish him well.

The grand slam he hit at the Astros this year was pretty awesome. Best of luck to him. Local kid too.
