J. Quintana:
As RP-----7ip, 1H, 0.43WHIP, 0.00ERA As SP-----3.97ERA, 1.40WHIP, 129IP/143H, 4.31era in innings 1-6, 0.00ERA in innings 7-9. Innings 1-6 opponents hit .312 off Quintana. H. Santiago: As RP-----3.88ERA, 51IP, 53K As SP----- 1.86ERA, 19IP, 26K, 3.01ERA in innings 1-6, 2.95era in innings 7-9. After hitters have faced him 3 times in a game 0.179BAA I'm hoping H. Santiago can win the job, I like his stuff (I like Quintana as well) Eventually both will be #4 and #5. 93MPH FB top 97MPH 83MPH CHG 79MPH SLD 74MPH SCR Thoughts?

If and when they are 4 and 5, with Sale and Danks, 4 lefties is not my cup of tea.

If Santiago can avoid giving up the longball I like his potential, but as of right now I think Quintana put in too much good work for most of last season for it not to be his job to lose.

Small sample size, no? The guy came in for mop-up duties for a DH in Cleveland. So in reality, he has no bullpen experience. |

With baseball the way it is, the possibility of any team filling out its rotation in a few years solely from within is really slim.

It is Quintana's job to lose going into camp. I heard Coop say that on MLB Network Radio the other day.

Does any other pitching coach in MLB appear in the media as much as Cooper?

Funny you say that. He's a guy who gets bothered by the hard questions but yet can't wait to go find a microphone and get on air.

I like 'em both.
Santiago's FB stays a bit too straight for me sometimes and it can get launched bu even mediocre hitters. |

Hector has + velocity on his fastball but you are right, it doesn't have a ton of movement. The key for Santiago is that screwball. It is his wipeout pitch and one he absolutely needs command of as a starter to get right handed hitters out. AL hitters will sit on his fastball all day if he can't get that "screwgie" over the plate. The lost command of the screwball is the reason Hector lost the closer job to Reed. Hector seemed to find it again in spot start duty late last year so maybe it is a pitch that comes to him after he works a couple innings.

Russ:
Agree with your post. Today you actually need six starters...not five. Lip |
