Default Abreu wins SN ROY; Semien gets one vote

Congrats to Jose, but seriously, who voted for Marcus?

I guarantee you that from this day forward, Marcus Semien's bio will state that he finished 5th in 2014 AL ROY voting!

Well, this is the Sporting News ROY award. The BBWAA official award will be announced November 10.

Not really unexpected, and it wasn't so far from unanimous, especially considering the nature of the vote. I'm guessing the votes that didn't go to Abreu and didn't go to the Japanese pitcher came from voters who didn't believe he was a true rookie, having been an elite international professional player. I had expected a few more anti-Cuban votes.

The last two White Sox players to win this, of course, were Gordon Beckham and Ozzie Guillen, who almost never get mentioned at WSI. Before that, the most previous White Sox winner was Ron Kittle, whose team rookie home run record Abreu broke.

Kittle and Guillen, of course, went on to win the BBWAA Rookie of the Year, which is official but many people respect less because of who votes. Beckham should have. Andrew Bailey wasn't even that impressive in his rookie year if you watched the A's on a regular basis.

I thought Beckham finished second to Longoria.

Beckham finished 5th. As TDog, Oakland's Andrew Bailey won it. Alexei finished second to Longoria in 2008.

I'll wait for the actual award to be given out, but still good for Jose.

So...who at Sporting News voted for Marcus Semien for AL ROY? I mean, I like Marcus and think he can be a valuable player but AL rookie of the year?? He spent half the season in Charlotte.

I think TSN vote is a player's vote.

Sporting News is a players' vote. The official BBWAA awards are selected writers. Gold Gloves are managers and coaches. ESPYs are garbage.

You have to wonder, though, about the Semien vote. Considering that he is a teammate of Abreu and spent more than half the season in the minors after starting the year in the majors, the Semien vote might easily be read as an anti-Abreu statement.

Well, Idk which players get to vote, but I will say Abreu seems like such a nice guy, I wouldn't be surprised if it was him who voted for Marcus.

Who knows, maybe it was Beckham
