The nice thing about following a team that is out of the race is that losing doesn't matter so much.
Maybe Reed was channeling Bobby Jenks, whose blown saves in Baltimore loomed large in his legend. Maybe Reed hasn't been getting enough work lately. He's still more than 15 innings short of his career high for innings pitched, and there's only about three weeks left in the season. Certainly, his worst inning of the year came fairly early in the season and had nothing to do with being overused. Closers who are used a lot will blow some saves. Closers on teams that go into long losing streaks can have a hard time staying sharp if they are only used in save situations, and Reed had 8 days off before his non-save appearance two days ago. Gaining experience from which you can learn from your mistakes in a season where it doesn't matter whether you win or lose isn't such a bad thing. Today, the difference between giving up the tying run and giving up the winning run with the Weiters single could have been the 2-2 pitch to McLouth with one out. Reed struck out McLouth on a 3-2 slider, but if he retired McLouth at 2-2, Markakis wouldn't have been running on the pitch, stealing second with the strikeout. He wouldn't have been on second with two outs when Wieters came up. Gillaspie should have had his second extra-inning game-winning road home run of the season. He also was robbed of a home run that would have tied a home game in the ninth. |

Bad guess on my part, maybe the TV will be part of a historic month of baseball.

The good news: The Sox are down 4 games to the Cubs, and within 2 1/2 of Miami. Too bad they don't play Miami on the road.

Not withstanding Conor's pinch homer yesterday, the platoon of Keppinger and Gillaspie is as unproductive as any Sox platoon I can recall. |
