Default R.I.P., Jim Fregosi

Numerous tweets have confirmed this. Never saw him manage, but RIP to one of our own.

Jim Fregosi suffered a stroke during a Major League Baseball alumni cruise, and was flown to Miami from the Cayman Islands on Tuesday.

Jim was unusual but friendly guy. I am glad that I got to know him and will miss him.

Jim Fregosi is still in a Miami hospital. He suffered multiple strokes. He has not died.

Important clarification from Dennis Gilbert: Jim Fregosi was taken off life support in Miami hospital. Thought he had died. So sorry.

That's an interesting example of how we put meaning into terms that shouldn't really be there.

Ok, I changed the thread title. Until more information comes out, hope for the best for the guy. "Taken off life support" has two connotations. In this case, he is apparently in critical condition, and living without life support. He has not passed away.

I liked him when he was here. He was saddled with some brutal late 80s teams though.

That he was. I think he was a good manager. But nobody could have won with the rosters he was given with the White Sox.

He was a really good shortstop for the Angels. Later in his career, Jim was traded to the Mets for a young, erratic pitcher named Nolan Ryan.

Fregosi is probably the symbol that stands out the most to me for those awful late '80's teams. Well, he and Donnie Hill. I hated Donnie Hill. My young, foolish, immature self was happy when they fired him, but looking back, the team was so bad that no manager would have taken them anywhere. I don't remember feeling like he was making bad managerial moves. I just hated that the team was soooo bad. I was happy for him when he won with Philadelphia, and in his interviews he always seemed like a nice, funny guy. R.I.P.

C'mon, the Sox had Steve Carlton and George Foster!

Those were some dark years, especially with the team threatening to move to St. Pete.

RIP Jim.
Always knew he was a good manager but was dealt a lousy hand with the Sox teams of the late 80s.
Pretty good shortstop and decent hitter in his early days with the Angels, made it to the All Star game 6 times.
IIRC he was one of those guys who feasted on White Sox pitching.

Post In Memory of Jim Fregosi

Mr. Fregosi was indeed dealt a lousy hand of players while he was managing the White Sox. I'll remember him for his intensity all the way to the finish line...and for that windbreaker he'd wear no matter how brutally hot and humid it got during those summer games. In my book, the most underrated manager in White Sox history.
