The Score just said the unknown team who claimed Hamels is the Cubs.

Apparently confirmed. Wow - that would be one hell of a pickup for them.

If they pull it off, you'd have to think one of their "greatest prospects in the history of the game'" would have to be included. If I were the Phillies, I wouldn't move him for anything less at this point. You can always move him in the offseason when you can deal with the other 29 teams.

Man I don't know. Hamels has what, 4 yrs/$100M left on his contract? Even if he isn't a senior citizen, he has a lot of mileage on that arm. And he's had a fair amount of injury issues.

They had a sports writer from philly on the score, he said he doubts it happens and doubts Hamels would go to the Cubs.

All players go on waivers. Is this amateur hour on FlyingSock?

Yes, they do. However, it was known Hamels was being discussed on the trading block prior to July 31, and the Cubs are not the typical team that would submit a claim simply to block (that's usually from a team fighting for the playoffs).

So it's a legit discussion as to whether they could work something out and whether Hamels would waive the NTC.

Right but the big story here is Philly did not automatically retract the claim. It means they are atleast giving the Cubs a chance to make an offer.

Of course the Phillies are going to let the Cubs make offers. They'd be stupid not to. Abreu was claimed on waivers too. The White Sox didn't immediately pull him back. Kershaw too. And Puig.

If I wanted Cole Hammels, and he came with a $22 million per year price tag, I doubt I'd part with too much to get him.

Seriously, if Philadelphia is thinking of retooling - and they probably should - they may not pull him back off of waivers, leaving the Cubs to pay that price tag.

Eventually the Cubs will start buying/acquiring top pitching but pitching can be a crapshoot sometimes. If you're a pitcher looking for that BIG pay day are you going to mention to anyone your arm aches just a little? How many guys out there are like that?

Hamels is an excellent pitcher; still at the top of his game -- salary dumps are for under-performing players. If the Phillies are retooling, Hamels is their biggest trade chip by far. I'm guessing, the Cubs would absolutely lose either Baez or Bryant and probably another top notch minor league talent to acquire him.

Also, 90 million for 4 years for an ace in mid contract is a hell of a lot better then paying 8/200 or 7/150 on the open market for an ace. Hamels contract is not an issue to the Phillies nor will it be an issue for inquiring teams.

I'd be shocked if the Cubs did a deal of that nature. They've rebuilt for several years now in order to obtain a number of prospects to turn the franchise around. Unloading two of their "blue chips" and picking up this sort of salary would be very surprising to me.

In addition - the guys has something like 1,800 innings already on that arm. At $22 million a year it's just too steep.
